Is it requires to get license for selling solar energy?
The most common question arise in everyone’s mind is, do we need any type of license for selling solar electricity to the government in India? The simple answer this question is no. You don’t need to any license for selling the solar energy to the government as a individually.
How to sell solar energy to the government?
If your solar system produces more energy then you required then it’s obvious that you have to sell the energy to the government. Because storage of solar energy is highly expensive.
In this case, government starts 3 way to sell the energy to them which are listed below.
- Selling through Net Metering
- Selling through Gross Metering
- Selling through Net Billing
Selling solar energy through net metering
First of all, government find net metering option to receive solar power from the consumer. In this method, net meter will be installed which measure the export and import of solar energy through your solar system and by the Discom respective.
For example, if you used 150 units in a month and your rooftop solar plant generates also 150 units then you will get zero electricity bill.
But in this case, Discom thinks about what about the service charges and metering charges. That’s why Government dive from net metering to the new concept of gross metering.
Selling solar electricity through gross metering
In gross metering concept, you got 2 bills from the Discom one is how much power you consumed and another one is how much power you export to the Discom. Along with that Discom also set the amount of your export power which is less compared to import power from the Discom.
One major problem in this method is you have to pay the bill of electricity consumption for every month while you get the money of your export power in 3 to 4 months. In this case consumers are not satisfied with the government.
For example, you are using 200 units in a month then you have to pay full bills if one unit rate is 7 rupees then total bill amount is Rs 1400 but you send 100 units to the Discom through grid then Discom will pay you 3 rupees per unit. It means (200*7) – (100*3) = Rs 1100 is the payable amount.
This is the problem which is faced by the consumers. That’s why Government now comes to the new method called net billing.

Through Net billing
For example, you need 200 kWh (Units) per month and your solar panel system produces 100 units in a month but during a monthly you import electricity from the Discom is 150 units. It means the calculation is (150*7) – (50*3) = Rs 900 is the payable amount to the Discom.
